If you ever experience a sunstroke or see someone experiencing a sunstroke you must act. Sunstroke isn’t something to joke about and can be very serious. The good thing is there are a couple of things to do. Depending on the severity the things are slightly different. I will show you what to always do no matter how severe a sunstroke seems to be. Not acting can result in the loss of someones life!
Lower the body temperature
The first thing you should be concerned about is the body temperature. With a sunstroke or any other heat stroke the body temperature of a person rises and can even be at fever levels. It is important to cool the body down as soon as possible and get the circulation back to normal. Avoid sunlight exposure altogether, this is what ultimately causes a sunstroke.
- Move a person (or yourself if that’s the case) to a cool area. Preferably an air conditioned room or building.
- Take off the persons clothes. Taking off clothing will let the sweat do it’s job and cool the body
- Drinking cold water with ice will also help reduce body temperature
These things you always have to do and the key thing is to act quick! The quicker you will act the higher the chance of not damaging any organs and the higher the chance of survival.
Call an ambulance / 911
The next thing you want do is call an ambulance or a doctor. Only a doctor can tell you how severe the sunstroke was and what should be done next.
You might hesitate because you are worried about if it is necessary or maybe about the cost. But at the end of the day you should always keep in mind that someones life lays in your hand. Nobody will ever be angry on you because you cared for someone and called an ambulance! Don’t ever hesitate, call!
Prevention is key
The key to treating a sunstroke is prevention! Don’t event let it get that far. Preventing sunstroke is not difficult and there are a few things you should consider doing, such as drinking enough water and wearing sunblock. You’ll find more information on our sunstroke prevention page.
Usually recovery takes around one to two days. After that you should feel good again. Depending on the severity and initial treatment though it may take a while longer and you will have to visit a doctor or hospital. In any case drinking lots of water will speed up the recovery process.
